Kyoto — Honnō-ji Shadow Registry

🎭Your Mission

You are an imperial investigator in Kyoto, 1582, dispatched by the Emperor to reconstruct the final hours of Oda Nobunaga, the great unifier betrayed at Honnō-

Delve into Kyoto's shadows, where Oda Nobunaga's fate was sealed on June 21, 1582, an event that reshaped Japan.

The story that haunts this land

Your investigation begins at Shōkoku-ji Temple, a Rinzai Zen edifice founded in 1382 by the 3rd Ashikaga shogun, Ashikaga Yoshimitsu. This site, rebuilt after the 1400 fire, houses the Dai Tokufu mon, an 18m high main gate. The Sanmon, dating from 1614 and designated a National Treasure of Japan, is a key landmark. Here, you examine Buddha statues carved by Kano Tanyu in the 17th century, looking for clues hidden in the wood and patina, while appreciating this UNESCO World Heritage Kyoto 1994 site. Shōkoku-ji is strategically located in the Kamigyō district, only 500m from the original Honnō-ji site, marking the start of your quest.

Continue your journey to the Kyoto Imperial Palace, or Kyoto Gyoen, the residence of emperors from 1331 to 1868, rebuilt after the 1788 fire. The 75-hectare park and the main palace, 460m long by 210m wide, are places of power where 9 imperial enthronement ceremonies have taken place since 1868. You explore the Seiryō-den, the throne room rebuilt in 1855, and the vast Kyoto Gyoen National Garden, created in 1758. This 59-hectare imperial garden, open to the public since 1871, features over 200 cherry trees planted in 1882 and is classified as a historical landscape garden, offering a striking contrast to the court intrigues that unfolded there.

Next, head to the Nishijin Textile Center, located 1km west of Shōkoku-ji. This historic textile district, active since the 14th century, was a supplier to the imperial court during the Muromachi era (1336-1573). The modern center, opened in 1972, displays kimonos and demonstrates Nishijin-ori silk weaving with looms dating from the 1920s. While not a direct site of the Honnō-ji incident, the opulence of the fabrics and the richness of the textile craftsmanship attest to the economic and cultural power of Kyoto, a city whose fate was so violently shaken by Akechi Mitsuhide's betrayal.

Your path leads you to the original Honnō-ji site, the exact place where Oda Nobunaga committed suicide on June 21, 1582, during the Honnō-ji incident, betrayed by Akechi Mitsuhide. This discreet historical marker in the Kamigyō district is a central point for understanding the end of Nobunaga's Sengoku campaign. The temple was rebuilt elsewhere in 1593, but this current site, 800m southeast of Shōkoku-ji, preserves the memory of this key event. Afterwards, take Muromachi-dori, a historic street crossing Kamigyō, named after the Muromachi era. 700m long, it connects Shōkoku-ji to the Honnō-ji site and was a main thoroughfare for samurai processions in the 16th century, lined with 19th-century machiyas.

As you complete your investigation through the alleys of Kyoto, you have retraced the steps of key figures in the Honnō-ji incident. From the grandeur of Shōkoku-ji, witness to Ashikaga Yoshimitsu's power, to the silent corridors of the Kyoto Imperial Palace, every stone of this Kansai city whispers history. You have passed through the Nishijin Textile Center, a symbol of ancestral craftsmanship, and walked along Muromachi-dori, once trodden by samurai. But it is at the Honnō-ji site that history truly comes alive, where the destinies of Oda Nobunaga and Akechi Mitsuhide were tragically intertwined, paving the way for Toyotomi Hideyoshi. This immersive exploration offers you a deep understanding of the city and its heritage, a UNESCO World Heritage Kyoto 1994 site, far beyond classic tours.

Beginning of the Ōnin War, which devastates Kyoto and initiates the Sengoku period.
1477
Official end of the Ōnin War, leaving Kyoto in ruins and the shogunate weakened.
