The Black Death, arriving in Sardinia around 1347 via trade routes, devastated the island with unprecedented brutality. Ports like Porto Torres near Sassari were entry points for this calamity. Sassari's population, then an important economic and political center, was decimated. Contemporary chroniclers describe a terrifying mortality rate, sometimes up to two-thirds of the population, transforming flourishing cities into open-air cemeteries. The impact was so profound that it permanently altered the island's demography, economy, and social structure.

Local authorities, often overwhelmed by the scale of the disaster, attempted desperate measures, from collective prayer to isolating the sick, but without real success against a disease whose cause they ignored. Many villages were abandoned, their inhabitants fleeing contagion or succumbing to the epidemic.
