Your adventure begins at the foot of Caana, the main temple of Caracol, towering 143 feet (43.6 meters) high, the tallest ancient building in Belize. Built during the Classic Maya period (250-900 AD), this ceremonial center hosted religious rituals and royal gatherings. From its summit, panoramic views of the jungle, the Maya Mountains, and the Belize-Guatemala border will give you a unique perspective on the extent of the Caracol kingdom. Priests and rulers used its exceptional acoustics to amplify their voices towards the lower plaza, a crucial detail for your quest for the forgotten register.
Heading towards the Main Plaza of Caracol, you enter the heart of the city, surrounded by monumental structures. This site was the venue for massive gatherings during the Classic period, also benefiting from natural acoustic amplification that facilitated the dissemination of royal announcements and decrees. The Main Plaza is a key step in deciphering the clues: it is part of an urban complex covering nearly 25,000 acres, testifying to an elaborate urban planning that even included agricultural fields integrated into the Mayan city.
The path then leads you to the Ball Court, a typical structure of Mayan cities, present in Caracol near the central plazas. It was here that the ritual of the pok-a-tok ball game took place, a major social and religious event during the Classic period.
