Initiated in 1942 by the Imperial Japanese Army, the construction of the 'Death Railway' aimed to connect Thailand to Burma to support the invasion of British India. Over 415 kilometers through dense jungle, mountains, and rivers, nearly 60,000 Allied prisoners of war (British, Australian, Dutch, American) and approximately 200,000 Asian civilian laborers were forced to work in inhumane conditions.
Tropical diseases such as cholera, malaria, and dysentery, combined with malnutrition, exhaustion, and the violence of Japanese guards, took a devastating toll. It is estimated that over 12,000 Allied POWs and up to 90,000 Asian laborers perished during this colossal project, completed in October 1943.
