Mont Saint-Michel — the Marvel of the Western World
In 708, legend has it, the Archangel Michael appears to Aubert, Bishop of Avranches, and commands him to build an oratory on Mont Tombe, a granite islet surrounded by Europe's most powerful tides. Aubert hesitates, the archangel insists — and pierces his skull with his finger to convince him. Aubert's punctured skull is still preserved at the Avranches basilica.
Over the centuries, the modest oratory becomes one of Christendom's most grandiose abbeys. The Benedictine monks build the Merveille, a masterpiece of Gothic architecture suspended between sky and sea. The cloister, the Salle des Chevaliers, the refectory — each level is a feat of medieval engineering. The scriptorium produces illuminated manuscripts of extraordinary beauty, spreading knowledge across Europe.
Turned into a prison during the Revolution — nicknamed "the Bastille of the seas" — the Mount was saved in the 19th century thanks to a campaign led by Victor Hugo. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979, it now welcomes more than 2.5 million visitors each year.
