Cervantes and the Giants of La Mancha

In the shadow of Consuegra's iconic windmills on Cerro Calderico, a forgotten manuscript surfaces—etched with symbols that Cervantes himself is said to have deciphered during his time in La Mancha. Built by the Order of Saint John in the 16th century, these twelve giants guarded more than grain: whispers persist of a Templar treasure, smuggled here during their expulsion, its location encoded in a document hidden within the mills and nearby castle. But time is against you. Rival seekers have deciphered the first clues, and the manuscript's final revelation—pointing to riches buried beneath the Crestería—will vanish with the next storm. Starting from the heart of the mills, decipher the windmill names tied to Don Quixote, crack the castle's cryptic inscriptions, and unravel the Plaza de España's Renaissance secrets. Each landmark holds a piece of the puzzle. Outwit the past: track the manuscript's trail through the compact hilltop ensemble of Castle of La Muela, the twelve windmills (Sancho, Bolero, and more), Plaza de España, Clock Tower, San Gumersindo College, and wooden balconies. Expose Cervantes's enigma and seize the treasure in this gripping 2km chase across Consuegra's historic crown.

Miguel de Cervantes

From Lepanto to the Giants

Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra (1547-1616), born in Alcalá de Henares, was a brave soldier before becoming one of history's greatest writers. In 1571, he participated in the naval Battle of Lepanto, where the Holy League defeated the Ottoman fleet. During this bloody battle, Cervantes was wounded in the chest and left hand, partially losing the use of the latter, earning him the nickname 'the One-Armed Man of Lepanto'. These experiences of war, imprisonment, and captivity in Algiers deeply shaped his worldview.

Far from breaking his spirit, these trials nourished his imagination. It was after these years of hardship and struggle for survival that Cervantes, seemingly an invalid, undertook the work that would make him immortal: The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote of La Mancha. This revolutionary novel, published in two parts (1605 and 1615), depicts an idealistic but disconnected knight-errant, whose imaginary confrontation with the windmills of Consuegra has become one of the most famous scenes in world literature.
