Pioneer Cemetery — The Lost Legacy

Boise was born in 1863 with Idaho's gold rush, when prospectors established Fort Boise to protect wagon trains on the Oregon Trail. The State Capitol Building, erected between 1905 and 1912 by architect John Tomlinson, marks the culmination of this territorial epic. Its 208-foot copper dome, covered with gold leaf in 1990, dominates the valley where George L. Shoup installed the first state government. Managed by Boise Parks and Recreation since 1920, this cemetery rededicated in 1990 after restoration preserves the burials of founding families who transformed a mining camp into a state capital.

The Basque Block concentrates the largest Basque community in the United States outside California, developed from the 1890s by immigrants who came for gold mining and ranching. The Basque Museum & Cultural Center documents this massive immigration that shaped Boise's cultural identity. Boise Depot, built in 1890 for the Oregon Short Line, connected this isolated capital to the national railroad network. Its Romanesque Revival architecture symbolizes territorial Idaho's gradual integration into the American Union.

The Boise River Greenbelt, a 25-mile linear park developed since the 1970s, today connects all these pioneer vestiges in a unique urban route. You take away from this exploration the image of a tamed Far West, where descendants of Basque gold seekers mingle with tourists in a capital that became modern without denying its roots.
