The Last Secret of the Russian-American Company

In 1812, Russian explorers from the far north established Fort Ross, a remote outpost on the wild Sonoma Coast. Led by Ivan Kuskov, they built a stockaded fortress amid redwood giants, trading furs and forging alliances with Native Kashia Pomo. But whispers persist of a secret legacy: a hidden cache of imperial treasures and maps to untold riches, concealed by the last commandant, Alexander Rotchev, as the colony crumbled in 1841. Sabotage, betrayal, and a cursed prophecy forced its burial—now, eerie signs mark its trail through the park's historic structures. You are the only one who can decipher the settlers' coded inscriptions, piecing together clues from the Rotchev House, Magazin warehouse, Orthodox chapel, and windmill ruins. Track the path of treachery across blockhouses, stockades, and coastal overlooks, outwitting the forces that guard the secret. Solve the enigma at Fort Ross State Historic Park to claim the lost Russian legacy—or let it fade into Pacific mists forever.

« « These redwoods, rising like living cathedrals, awaited discovery by those who could read the signs of the earth. » »
Hypothesis by an anonymous settler, c. 1850

From Fort Ross to the Mendocino Mills

Established in 1812 by the Russian-American Company, Fort Ross was the first permanent Russian settlement in California, initially aimed at food supply and sea otter fur trade. For nearly three decades, the Russians, in collaboration with the indigenous Pomo people and Aleut workers, cultivated land, built ships, and explored the region's natural resources. Their presence, though limited, left a lasting mark on the landscape and intercultural relations before economic and political difficulties led to the sale of the fort in 1841.

A few years after the Russians' departure, the Mendocino coast, a few tens of kilometers north, became the scene of a new rush: that of timber. In 1852, the construction of the first steam-powered sawmill by Jerome B. Ford marked the beginning of the 'lumber' era that transformed Mendocino into a thriving logging port. The immense forests of redwoods and Douglas firs, until then untouched, became the raw material for an industry that would shape modern California, but also devour entire landscapes. The legacy of the Russians and the pioneers' thirst for wood intersect in this forgotten story.
