Franklin, November 30, 1864: The desperate final charge
« War is so terrible that we cannot afford to forget it. »— Robert E. Lee, général confédéré
On November 30, 1864, the town of Franklin, Tennessee, was the scene of one of the bloodiest and most controversial battles of the American Civil War. The Confederate Army of Tennessee, under the command of Lieutenant General John Bell Hood, pursued the Union Army of the Ohio, led by Major General John M. Schofield. Determined to destroy Union forces before they could join Major General George H. Thomas's army in Nashville, Hood ordered a massive frontal assault against the entrenched Union positions, without adequate reconnaissance and late in the day.
Known as the 'Pickett's Charge of the West,' this assault involved 19 Confederate brigades, approximately 20,000 men, advancing across nearly two miles of open ground. The battle, lasting barely five hours, was a disaster for the Confederates, who suffered approximately 6,200 casualties, including 6 generals killed or mortally wounded, and thousands of men. Schofield successfully retreated to Nashville, leaving behind a decimated Confederate army unable to continue its Tennessee campaign. Franklin remains a poignant testament to the human cost of war and disastrous military decisions.
