Gaspee Point — Arsonists' Logbook Secrets

🎭Your Mission

You are a dedicated historical investigator, determined to unearth a pivotal secret from June 1772 in Warwick, Rhode Island.

On June 9, 1772,

The Spark that Ignited the Revolution

« Le brûlage du Gaspee puede justamente ser considerado como el encendido de la primera chispa de la Revolución Americana. »
John Russell Bartlett, historiador

The Gaspee Affair: A Prelude to Revolution

In the years leading up to the American Revolution, tensions between the colonies and Great Britain were escalating, particularly due to unpopular taxes and strict enforcement of trade laws. HMS Gaspee, a Royal Navy schooner, was particularly zealous in combating smuggling in Narragansett Bay, seizing ships and cargo indiscriminately. Its commander, Lieutenant William Dudingston, was despised by local merchants and sailors, many of whom relied on smuggling for their economic survival. On June 9, 1772, while pursuing the packet boat Hannah, the Gaspee ran aground on the Namquid Point sandbar, a few miles from Pawtuxet Village.

News of the Gaspee's grounding spread quickly. Under the leadership of figures like John Brown of Providence and Captain Abraham Whipple, a group of about 60 men, some disguised as Native Americans, departed from Providence and Pawtuxet in eight longboats. They boarded the Gaspee, wounded Dudingston, and evacuated the crew before setting the ship on fire. This act of destroying royal property was a capital offense. The Crown offered a substantial reward for the identification of the culprits and appointed a Royal Commission of Inquiry. However, despite efforts and threats, no Rhode Island resident testified, and the investigation was eventually closed without indictment. The Gaspee Affair became a powerful symbol of colonial resistance and solidarity against British authority.
