Monument Circle — The Cyclone's Reckoning

In the 1920s, Indiana became the stage for a staggering social and political phenomenon: the Ku Klux Klan achieved unparalleled influence there. Under the leadership of D.C. Stephenson, the 'Grand Dragon,' the Indiana KKK boasted over 300,000 members, nearly a third of native-born white men in the state. This extremist organization, advocating white supremacy, anti-Catholicism, anti-Judaism, and anti-immigration, infiltrated every stratum of society, from local and state politics to law enforcement, schools, and churches. Politicians, fearing the Klan's electoral power, bowed to its demands, allowing Stephenson to become a more influential figure than the governor himself.

However, this hegemony would not last. In 1925, the spectacular downfall of D.C. Stephenson for the kidnapping, sexual assault, and murder of a young woman, Madge Oberholtzer, shook the Klan's empire. His trial, closely followed by the nation, revealed the extent of his corruption and immorality, as well as the involvement of many high-ranking officials. Stephenson's conviction and his subsequent revelations about political corruption marked the beginning of the rapid decline of the KKK in Indiana, leaving a deep scar on the state's history.
