The story that haunts this land
Your quest begins at Parque Central de Liberia, the central square of Liberia which was the heart of public celebrations and political demonstrations in the 19th century. It was here, amidst the rumors and feverish debates of the era, that the fate of the Guanacaste province was decided. Around you, historical buildings attest to the importance of this place, in close proximity to the main church and old government buildings, where voices for or against the 1824 annexation were raised.
Continue your investigation to the Iglesia Inmaculada Concepción de María, built in 1854 under the direction of Father Rafael Solís. Its two 40-meter neoclassical towers dominate the Parque Central, symbols of unwavering faith and silent witnesses to the religious and social events that marked the annexation of Guanacaste. This sacred edifice saw processions and influential figures of the time, who prayed or conspired for the future of the region.
The path then leads you to the Antigua Gobernación de Liberia, the former colonial government palace built around 1830.
