The Ottoman Empire's massive fleet
**Fort St. Elmo — The desperate heroism of 1565**
« It is not blood that is lacking, but land where it can flow. »— Jean de Valette, Grand Master of the Hospitallers, 1565
In 1565, the Ottoman Empire, under the reign of Suleiman the Magnificent, launched a major offensive to seize Malta, the last bastion of the Order of St. John. The objective was to control the Mediterranean and open the way to Europe. The Great Siege of Malta, one of the bloodiest in history, pitted an overwhelming Ottoman force of nearly 40,000 men against approximately 700 knights and 8,000 Maltese and mercenary soldiers. The first target was Fort St. Elmo, a crucial strategic point for the defense of Valletta's harbors.
For 28 days, the defenders of St. Elmo, led by Bailiff Romegas and Knight La Cerda, repelled assault after assault, suffering immense losses. On June 23, 1565, after incessant bombardment and devastating attacks, the fort fell. The heroic, though futile, resistance cost the Ottomans dearly and delayed their progress, allowing the remaining Maltese forces to prepare. As a warning, Mustafa Pasha, the Ottoman commander, had the fallen knights decapitated and their severed heads floated across the Grand Harbor towards the defenders of the remaining cities, an act of barbarism that only exacerbated the besieged's determination.
