The Monk Seal's Last Refuge — Uncover Cala Gonone's Hidden Mystery

The Mediterranean monk seal (Monachus monachus) was once a common sight in the waters of Sardinia. Revered and feared, this creature, whose local name, 'bue marino' (sea ox), evokes its size and deep voice, was a key element of the coastal ecosystem. It sought refuge in the numerous caves and coves, some of which, like the world-famous Grotta del Bue Marino, became its last sanctuaries. Fishermen and shepherds from the Dorgali region shared a complex bond with these marine mammals, sometimes competing for resources but often coexisting in a precarious balance.

However, from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the monk seal population experienced a drastic decline due to hunting, overfishing, and habitat destruction. The Grotta del Bue Marino, with its isolation and network of galleries, became one of the last strongholds where these seals were observed. The last confirmed sightings in the Dorgali area date back to the 1960s. Today, although some sporadic reappearances have been documented elsewhere in the Mediterranean, the monk seal has become a symbol of the fragility of marine biodiversity, its memory living on in legends and the cave's name.
