Sherman's Error
The 1864 Atlanta campaign pits two masters of military art: William T. Sherman, apostle of total war, and Joseph E. Johnston, virtuoso of elastic defense. Since May, Johnston has been retreating in good order before 100,000 Federals, turning each position into a deadly trap. At Kennesaw Mountain, he deploys 50,000 Confederates on a 10-kilometer front, entrenched behind abatis and red earth parapets.
On June 27, 1864, Sherman breaks his own doctrine of flanking movement. Convinced that Johnston has stretched his lines too thin, he launches a frontal assault on the heights of Pigeon Hill and Cheatham Hill. In one hour, 3,000 Northerners fall under Confederate crossfire. It's Sherman's bloodiest failure in Georgia — a lesson that will return him to flanking maneuvers until Atlanta. Johnston proves that a general can still stop a modern army through terrain science alone.
