Foster Auditorium — Decode Wallace's Defiance

🎭Your Mission

You are a covert operative, on campus at the University of Alabama, June 10, 1963.

Tomorrow, Governor George Wallace plans his infamous 'Stand in the Schoolhouse Door

« Are we to say to the world—and much more importantly, to each other—that this is a land of the free except for the Negroes; that we have no second-class citizens except for Negroes; that we have no class or caste system, no ghettoes, no master race except with respect to Negroes? »
John F. Kennedy, 11 juin 1963

The Invisible Wall

The 1954 Brown v. Board of Education ruling declared school segregation unconstitutional, but its implementation met fierce resistance in the American South. In Alabama, Governor George Wallace made the defense of segregation the cornerstone of his term, promising to personally oppose any attempt at integration. The University of Alabama, although theoretically open to African Americans following a 1956 court ruling (with the case of Autherine Lucy), remained de facto segregated until the enrollment of Vivian Malone and James Hood.

On June 11, 1963, the day of their enrollment, Wallace kept his promise. Facing the arrival of the students escorted by Brigadier General Henry Graham of the Alabama National Guard, he read a proclamation denouncing federal interference. The confrontation was nationally televised, forcing the Kennedy administration to act. The president federalized the National Guard, ordering Graham to uphold the law. Wallace finally yielded, and the students were able to enroll, marking a crucial victory for the civil rights movement.
