Pléville Le Pelley, the peg-leg pirate who became a minister
📱 1 to 10 phones · 1 team per phone · Independent codes
Georges René Pléville Le Pelley loses his leg at 13 during his first naval battle. This does not stop him from becoming France's most decorated corsair, capturing over 30 enemy ships, and ending up as Minister of the Navy under the Directory. His birthplace, Granville, keeps the memory of this extraordinary destiny.
Granville stands on a rocky promontory facing the English Channel, between cliffs, ramparts, and fishing port. This fortified town, nicknamed "the Monaco of the North," saw the birth of one of the most extraordinary sailors in French history. Pléville Le Pelley, who lost a leg at 13 to an English cannonball, pursued a fifty-year maritime career — corsair, frigate captain, Knight of Saint-Louis, and finally Minister of the Navy. Your mission leads from the Upper Town ramparts to the port, in the footsteps of this extraordinary destiny.
You're not just buying an escape game. You're carrying a living guide — historical anecdotes, forgotten legends, key monuments, hidden architecture — unfolding as you go.
At each stop, places ordinary guides miss — secret façades, sculpted crests, alleys steeped in history.
Every riddle is rooted in a real historical fact or local legend. You leave with dozens of stories to tell.

« "I lost my leg, not my honor. The sea does not ask how many legs you have." »— — Attributed to Pléville Le Pelley
Born in Granville in 1726, Georges René Pléville Le Pelley embarks at age 11 as a cabin boy. At 13, during a battle against an English ship off Newfoundland, a cannonball takes his left leg. Anyone else would have given up the sea. Not him. Fitted with a wooden leg, he returns to sea as soon as he recovers and will not leave it for fifty years.
His career reads like an adventure novel. A corsair during the Seven Years' War, he captures over 30 English ships. A frigate captain during the American War of Independence, he escorts French convoys. A Knight of the Order of Saint-Louis, he accumulates honors. In 1798, the Directory appoints him Minister of the Navy — the peg-legged sailor becomes the commander of the entire French fleet.
Granville, his hometown, was a corsair stronghold for centuries. Its fortified Upper Town, perched on a rocky spur, dominated the Channel shipping routes. The Pointe du Roc offers a spectacular view of Mont Saint-Michel on clear days. Christian Dior was born here in 1905, and his clifftop childhood home is now a museum. Granville remains a town of character — like the corsair it produced.
