Birka — Uncover the Trade Conspiracy

Birka Hamn welcomes you as it welcomed merchants from around the world between 750 and 975. This main port of the island was the first in Scandinavia to establish permanent trading posts to the Orient, accessible today by ferry from Stockholm in 45 minutes. Hjalmar Stolpe discovered here from 1870 Arabic silver coins, Byzantine silks and Frankish swords that testify to a commercial network extending from Ireland to Central Asia. The reconstructed wooden quays immerse you in the bustle of a port where Nordic furs were traded for oriental spices.

Svarta Jorden reveals the beating heart of Birka: this black layer 1 to 2 meters thick preserves traces of two centuries of intensive occupation. The largest habitation site on the island, it was methodically excavated by Stolpe who unearthed Arabic, Byzantine and Frankish objects confirming international trade. The wooden and clay houses sheltered merchants, craftsmen and money changers who transformed this Uppland territory into a European hub. Each archaeological layer tells the story of a generation of traders who enriched Scandinavian elites.

The fortress of Borgen has dominated Mälaren bay since 750, its circular ramparts 150 meters in diameter and 15 meters high controlling all trade routes. This fortified citadel protected warehouses and monetary workshops where Arabic silver was remelted into local coins. Its fortified gates filtered land caravans and river convoys, collecting taxes and passage rights that financed Viking expansion. From the summit, you overlook Lake Mälaren, the vital artery that connected Birka to Uppsala and Swedish iron mines.

The Gravfält spreads its 3,000 tombs across hills overlooking the port, testimony to wealth accumulated between 750 and 950. Among the 1,100 excavated burials, chamber tombs reveal 10-meter boats accompanying warriors and merchants to the afterlife. Rich female graves, adorned with oriental jewelry and precious fabrics, prove the existence of female merchant elites running their own networks. These aristocratic necropolises materialize two centuries of prosperity based on intercontinental exchange.

At the end of your investigation, Birka Museum has gathered since 1995 the evidence of this commercial conspiracy in its 500 m² of exhibition space. Original artifacts - coins from Samarkand, glass beads from Venice, Baltic amber - reconstruct the networks that made Birka the first Nordic economic hub.
