Tulum: The Last Mayan Stronghold
In 1518, when Juan de Grijalva sailed along the Yucatan coast, Tulum (Zamá, 'Dawn' in Maya) was one of the last inhabited Mayan cities. Built around 1200 on a 12-meter cliff overlooking the Caribbean Sea, this commercial fortress controlled the maritime jade and cacao trade route. Its main temple, El Castillo, served as both an astronomical observatory and lighthouse for merchant canoes.
The Spanish discovered a still-living civilization: priest-astronomers calculated Venus cycles, predicted eclipses, and maintained the 260-day sacred calendar. But the arrival of conquistadors, followed by smallpox epidemics, quickly emptied the city. By 1550, Tulum was abandoned, leaving behind its stone walls and astronomical secrets carved in limestone.
