Deep in the Lacandon jungle, this ancient Maya city
Itzamna-Balam — the astronomer who painted stars on stone
« The Maya were the greatest astronomers of pre-Columbian America, capable of predicting eclipses with remarkable precision. »— Linda Schele, epigraphist, 1986
Yaxchilan, 'Green Stones' in Maya, was one of the most powerful cities of the Classic period (250-900 CE). Located on the banks of the Usumacinta River, at the current border between Mexico and Guatemala, it controlled river trade and politically dominated vassals like Bonampak, Lacanha, and Dos Pilas. Its rulers — notably Itzamna-Balam I (681-742), Bird-Jaguar IV (742-768), and Itzamna-Balam II (769-800) — developed the most refined sculptural art of their time, with narrative lintels of extraordinary historical precision.
Astronomy held a central place in Yaxchilan. The city's scribe-astronomers established calculation tables for predicting solar and lunar eclipses, positions of Venus and Mars, and cycles of the ritual tzolkin calendar. This knowledge guided political decisions: coronations, wars, matrimonial alliances were synchronized with celestial events. The astronomical codices of Yaxchilan, unfortunately lost when the city was abandoned around 900 CE, rivaled in sophistication those of Copán in Honduras and Xultun in Guatemala. Today only the sculpted testimonies of this Maya astronomical science survive in the city's stone monuments.
