Nakhon Si Thammarat — Ligor Merchants' Code

Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan raises its 13th-century chedi at the heart of Nakhon Si Thammarat, a symbol engraved on the provincial seal and 25-satang coin. At the base of this sacred tower, the Viharn Tap Kaset gallery reveals elephant heads emerging from the chedi, stone guardians of Ligor's merchant treasures. These sculptures testify to the power of Maharaja Dharmasetu, ruler of Srivijaya in the 7th-8th centuries, who ordered the construction of sanctuaries throughout the Malay Peninsula to secure his trade routes.

The remains of the Old City Wall tell of the time when Nakhon Si Thammarat was the fortified lock of the Kingdom of Ligor. These ramparts protected warehouses of spices, silk, and porcelain that transited between Chinese junks and Arab dhows. The Viharn Phra Song Ma, with its staircase leading to the walkway around the chedi, was guarded by carved giant demons (yak), mystical protectors of the wealth accumulated by the city's merchants.

At San Lak Mueang, the city pillar shrine, sacred posts (lak mueang) mark the spiritual center of ancient Ligor. These pillars consecrated commercial pacts between the Srivijaya kingdoms and Malay principalities, guaranteeing free circulation of caravans on the maritime silk route. Wat Na Phra Boromathat, an adjacent temple across the street, housed monks' quarters where they blessed merchant expeditions.

The Viharn Kien, north of the main complex, houses a small temple museum displaying vestiges of millennial commercial exchanges. Further south, the great ubosot called Viharn Luang preserved royal charters that regulated the spice and precious metal trade. These documents engraved on gold leaves codified port taxes and passage rights that foreign merchants had to pay.

At Nakhon Si Thammarat National Museum, you discover artifacts from the Kingdom of Ligor that reveal the scope of this vanished commercial network. Chinese ceramics, Indian jewelry, Malay swords testify to the alliances you have retraced. Leaving these halls, you carry away understanding of a merchant code that united Asia for centuries, long before Europeans discovered these routes of prosperity.
