Eleonora d'Arborea (c. 1347-1404) was an exceptional Sardinian sovereign, Judge of the Giudicato of Arborea, one of the four independent kingdoms of Sardinia during the Middle Ages. Her greatest contribution was the promulgation of the Carta de Logu in 1392. This code of laws, one of the most advanced of its time in Europe, unified the civil and criminal law of the Giudicato. It was remarkable for the protection it afforded women (with severe penalties for rape and dishonor), its regulation of property law, and the establishment of clear and equitable legal procedures. The Carta de Logu remained in force in Sardinia for over 400 years, until 1827, testifying to its relevance and Eleonora's avant-garde vision.
