1895 — America's largest private castle hides its secret plans

« I want to create something that will stand for centuries, a monument not just to wealth, but to vision. »
George Washington Vanderbilt II, lettre à sa mère, 1889

The Vanderbilt Empire and the Birth of Biltmore

In 1888, George Washington Vanderbilt II, grandson of tycoon Cornelius Vanderbilt, discovered the Blue Ridge Mountains during a therapeutic journey. Fascinated by the wild beauty of the Appalachians, he gradually acquired 125,000 acres around Asheville — over 500 km² of forests, rivers, and peaks. His project: to create a self-sufficient estate combining a French Renaissance château, English gardens, and scientifically managed forest.

Construction of Biltmore House began in 1889 under the direction of Richard Morris Hunt, architect of Newport's châteaux. More than 1,000 workers labored for six years to erect this 250-room marvel, equipped with revolutionary innovations: electricity, elevators, intercom system, private bowling alley, and indoor swimming pool. Gifford Pinchot, future founder of the U.S. Forest Service, developed the 8,000 hectares of forest according to European principles of sustainable forestry.
