The history of the Acadians is one of remarkable survival and adaptation. Originally from Nova Scotia, these French colonists were brutally deported by the British between 1755 and 1764, an event known as the Great Expulsion. Dispersed across British colonies, France, or the Caribbean, many eventually found refuge in Louisiana, then under Spanish rule, where they were able to rebuild their lives and preserve their culture, giving birth to the Cajun people.
St Martinville, affectionately nicknamed "Petit Paris", became an epicenter of this new Acadian life. It is here that the legend of Evangeline and Gabriel is rooted, popularized by Longfellow's poem.
