Mulberry Street — The Forgotten Ledger

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, waves of Italian immigrants flocked to New York, fleeing poverty and persecution in Italy. They settled in Manhattan's Lower East Side, creating vibrant enclaves like Little Italy. This neighborhood, centered around Mulberry Street, became a haven, a community where Italian language, culture, and traditions could flourish despite the hardships and widespread discrimination. Entire families lived crammed into tenements, working in factories, on the docks, or as street vendors, building a new life, brick by brick, in the hope of a better future.

However, this period of growth was also marked by the emergence of criminal organizations. The 'Black Hand,' an extortion network, spread terror among the immigrant community, exploiting their vulnerability and distrust of American authorities. Figures like Giuseppe Morello, often considered the first 'Capo di tutti capi' of New York, laid the foundations of the American Mafia. But in the face of such adversity, the community also developed incredible resilience, sticking together through mutual aid societies, churches, and religious festivals, asserting its identity and place in the New York fabric.
