Bozeman — Lewis's Lost Notebook

The Lewis and Clark expedition, launched in 1804 by President Thomas Jefferson, had as its primary mission to explore and map the territories acquired during the Louisiana Purchase. Beyond its geopolitical objectives, the expedition was a major scientific undertaking, tasked with documenting the geography, indigenous populations, and, crucially, the flora and fauna of this then-unknown West. Meriwether Lewis, in particular, was a passionate amateur naturalist, and his botanical and zoological observations were the most comprehensive ever made at the time, laying the groundwork for scientific knowledge of North American biodiversity.

The expedition's passage through what is now Montana, especially near the headwaters of the Missouri and the Gallatin Valley, was a crucial moment in their journey.
