Dive into the clandestine New York of the Roaring Twenties

« The eighteenth amendment, from the beginning, was a failure. »
Fiorello LaGuardia, Mayor of New York (1934-1945)

New York, Capital of the Underworld

From 1920 to 1933, Prohibition plunged the United States into an era of contradiction. New York, a cosmopolitan and insatiable city, became the ideal playground for bootleggers and crime lords. Despite the ban on the production, sale, and transport of alcohol by the Eighteenth Amendment and the Volstead Act, thousands of speakeasies opened their doors, often right under the authorities' noses. The city boasted over 30,000 clandestine bars, creating a vibrant underground culture but also fertile ground for corruption and gang violence.

Figures like Arnold Rothstein, the 'Brain' behind many illegal operations, or the relentless agents Izzy Einstein and Moe Smith, who used cunning and disguises to infiltrate networks, marked this troubled period. Prohibition transformed New York society, making cocktails a clandestine art and jazz clubs temples of prohibited freedom. But it also left a legacy of mob power and cynicism towards the law, which the city would only begin to recover from after its repeal in 1933.
