Cerros — The key to a lost Maya astronomical prophecy
« « These celestial monuments were erected to dialogue with the gods and mark the passage of sacred time. » »— Unknown, Maya Chronicles (translation)
Cerros is a Maya archaeological site located on a peninsula in Corozal Bay, Belize. Founded around 400 BC during the Late Preclassic period, Cerros was a unique coastal city, focused on maritime trade and astronomical observation. Unlike many inland Maya sites, Cerros derived its wealth from its direct access to coastal trade routes, exchanging jade, obsidian, and other precious goods with cities in the Yucatán and other Mesoamerican regions. Its monumental architecture, especially its large pyramids, was erected rapidly, reflecting its status and importance.
The site is particularly famous for its 'Group E' complex, a rare and highly significant architectural configuration for the Maya, designed to precisely mark the solstices and equinoxes. Pyramid 5C-2nd, at the heart of this complex, is adorned with stucco masks depicting the rising and setting Sun, as well as deities associated with celestial cycles and fertility. Cerros reached its peak around 50 AD, before being mysteriously abandoned around 150 AD, its inhabitants dispersing or moving to other centers. Its ruins, now partially submerged by the bay's waters, bear witness to remarkable astronomical knowledge and engineering.
