Alexander Yaroslavich Nevsky (c. 1221-1263) was a Prince of Novgorod, then Grand Prince of Vladimir, an emblematic figure in Russian history. He is celebrated for his decisive military victories that halted the expansion of Western powers (Teutonic Order, Swedes) while maintaining a skillful policy with the Golden Horde in the East. In 1240, he crushed the Swedes at the Battle of the Neva, which earned him his nickname «Nevsky».
Two years later, in April 1242, he distinguished himself again in the legendary «Battle on the Ice» (or Battle of Lake Peipus). After liberating Pskov from the Knights of the Teutonic Order, he lured them onto the frozen Lake Peipus and used an ingenious tactic to encircle and defeat them. This victory was crucial, as it curbed Germanic Catholic expansion eastward and ensured the survival of the Orthodox faith and Russian identity. Nevsky is now revered as a saint and a national hero.
