Morlaix — the English raid and the Breton vengeance
On July 4, 1522, an English fleet of sixty ships commanded by the Earl of Surrey sailed up the Morlaix estuary. The town was empty: its inhabitants had left for the annual Guingamp fair. English soldiers landed without resistance and sacked the town, pillaging wine cellars and warehouses.
But the Bretons learned the news and returned in force. They found the English drunk on stolen wine, scattered through the streets. The counterattack was ferociously brutal — the English were massacred or driven back to their ships. The loot was recovered. The city then adopted its vengeful motto.
To prevent such a disaster from recurring, the people of Morlaix built the Château du Taureau at the bay's entrance — a maritime fortress locking down the estuary. Today, the pondalez houses (with staggered levels) still testify to the wealth of this merchant town that the English coveted.
