The Cristero War (1926-1929)
In 1926, President Plutarco Elías Calles promulgated the 'Ley Calles', banning public worship and expelling foreign priests. This anticlerical law triggered in Jalisco the revolt of the Cristeros, Catholic peasants who took up arms with the cry of '¡Viva Cristo Rey!'. Father Miguel Pro, a Jesuit trained in Europe, organized from Guadalajara a clandestine network of secret sacraments and religious literature distribution.
The Cristero War claimed more than 250,000 lives. It ended in 1929 with the 'Arreglos' negotiated between the Church and the Mexican State. Miguel Pro, who became a symbol of Catholic resistance, was beatified by John Paul II in 1988.
