Your adventure begins at Nord Darvoza, one of the gates of Itchan Kala, Khiva's inner city fortified by brick walls 8-10 meters high and 5-6 meters thick. This 6250-meter fortified perimeter was the last stop for Silk Road caravans before the desert route to Iran. As you enter this citadel, you walk the same cobblestones as merchants and travelers who, for centuries, made Khiva a major commercial and cultural crossroads in the Xorazm region.
