In 1043, Harald Hardrada, returning from his Byzantine campaigns, has the circular fortress of Fyrkat built near Aalborg. This revolutionary construction, with its four gates oriented to the cardinal points and its barracks arranged in a perfect cross, testifies to the military genius of the future King of Norway. Fyrkat quickly becomes a strategic center to control the Limfjord and prepare expeditions to England.
On September 25, 1066, Harald Hardrada perished at the Battle of Stamford Bridge, marking the end of the age of Viking invasions. But according to chronicles, the warrior-king supposedly hid at Fyrkat the plans of his revolutionary military strategy, based on the circular organization of fortresses and the coordinated use of navy and infantry.
