A Planned City on the Northern Frontier

Sapporo's official founding dates to 1868 during the Meiji era. Before this, the Ishikari Plain, where Sapporo now stands, was inhabited by the indigenous Ainu people, with scattered Japanese trade posts during the Edo period. The Meiji government, aiming to develop Hokkaido's resources and strengthen its northern borders, chose Sapporo as the administrative center. This decision was strategic; the city's location on a flat plain was suitable for large-scale urban and agricultural development, unlike the port city of Hakodate.

American specialists designed the city, resulting in a rectangular street grid plan similar to North American cities, with Odori Park at its center. This Western influence was also present in the architecture, with buildings like the Former Hokkaido Government Office, built in 1888 in an American Neo-Baroque style. The Sapporo Agricultural College, predecessor of Hokkaido University, was founded in 1876 to train personnel for the island's development. That same year, the Kaitakushi Brewery, which later became Sapporo Beer, opened, marking the beginning of the city's industrialization.

From Agricultural Hub to Olympic City

Sapporo's population grew rapidly due to an influx of migrants, establishing it as Hokkaido's main political, economic, and cultural center. The city was formally granted city status in 1922. Sapporo was selected to host the 1940 Winter Olympics, but the Second Sino-Japanese War led to its cancellation. During World War II, the city experienced bombings by American naval aircraft in July 1945. Post-war, Sapporo played a role in addressing Japanese food shortages by becoming a food production area.

The city received a boost in development when it hosted the 1972 Winter Olympic Games, the first Winter Games held in Asia. This event spurred urban infrastructure investments, including the opening of Japan's fourth subway system in 1971 and the construction of sports facilities and hotels. Sapporo continues to evolve, balancing its Meiji-era origins with contemporary urban challenges and a focus on sustainable development.

• —Odori Park — This wide park stretches for 1.5 kilometers through the city center, acting as a green belt. It is the main venue for events like the Sapporo Snow Festival and offers a space for relaxation.
• —Sapporo TV Tower — Located at the eastern end of Odori Park, this 147.2-meter tall tower offers an observation deck with views of the city and the park.
• —Former Hokkaido Government Office (Red Brick Office) — This American Neo-Baroque style building, constructed in 1888, is nicknamed "Akarenga" (Red Bricks). It is a symbol of Sapporo and now functions as a museum, art gallery, and research library.
• —Sapporo Clock Tower — Built in 1878 as the drill hall for Sapporo Agricultural College (now Hokkaido University), this wooden structure with its clapboard exterior is the oldest building in Sapporo and the oldest clock tower in Japan. It houses a museum detailing its history and the city's development.
• —Hokkaido University Botanical Garden — Established in 1886, these gardens are the second oldest botanical gardens in Japan. The 13.3-hectare site preserves a portion of the original forest that once covered the Ishikari Plain and features over 4,000 plant species, including alpine and native Hokkaido plants, as well as the oldest lilac in Sapporo.
• —Nijo Market — This fish market, dating back to the early Meiji period, is a spot for locals and tourists. You can find fresh seafood like crab, sea urchin, and salmon roe, and eat seafood rice bowls or grilled fish at its restaurants.

The best times to visit Sapporo are during spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) for comfortable weather and fewer crowds. In spring, from late April to May, cherry blossoms bloom, followed by lilacs in late May to early June. Autumn, particularly September and October, offers fall foliage and temperatures between 10-17°C, suitable for walking.

Summer (June to August) is also popular, with temperatures ranging from 20-25°C, and various outdoor festivals. Expect more tourists and higher accommodation prices during this season. Winter (December to March) is for snow sports and the Sapporo Snow Festival in early February, but temperatures can drop to -10°C. Avoid January and February if you are not planning to ski or attend the festival due to the cold and heavy snowfall.

Sapporo is served by New Chitose Airport (CTS), about a 35-minute train ride south of the city center, handling most domestic and international flights. The smaller Okadama Airport (OKD) is more centrally located but offers fewer flights, primarily to other Hokkaido cities.

Getting around Sapporo is efficient due to its public transportation network. The Sapporo Municipal Subway operates three lines (Namboku, Tozai, and Toho), with Odori Station as a central hub. A streetcar line covers the southwestern downtown area, and several bus companies provide routes, especially to suburban attractions. For convenient travel, consider using an IC card like SAPICA, which can be used on subways, buses, and streetcars, and offers points and transfer discounts. Parking can be found but may be limited in popular areas. Nijo Market is generally open daily from 7 am to 6 pm, with many restaurants serving breakfast and lunch.
