Stonington 1814: The Epic of a Small Town Against the Royal Navy
« “The intrepid courage of the inhabitants of Stonington repelled the enemy.” »— Excerpt from a contemporary letter, 1814
The War of 1812, often called the 'Second War of Independence,' was a major conflict between the United States and the United Kingdom, supported by its Native American allies. Tensions escalated due to British trade restrictions, the impressment of American sailors into the Royal Navy, and British support for Native American tribes against American expansion. The conflict, declared by the United States in June 1812, spread across land and sea, severely impacting trade and the security of coastal towns.
In August 1814, following the burning of Washington D.C., British forces turned their attention to the Connecticut coast. Stonington, a strategic port, became the target of a naval attack aimed at disrupting American trade and breaking morale. Facing a powerful squadron led by HMS Ramillies, the small local garrison, composed mainly of militiamen and citizen volunteers, had only three old cannons. Their fierce and unexpected resistance forced the British to retreat after four days of bombardment, making the Battle of Stonington a heroic and inspiring episode of the war.
