The Keep of Arques — sentinel of the Cathar valley
After the Albigensian Crusade, the lands confiscated from the lords of the South were redistributed to northern knights. Pierre de Voisins, companion of Simon de Montfort, received the lordship of Arques in 1231. His descendant Gilles built the current keep in the 14th century — a 25-meter square tower with elegant Gothic windows, a symbol of the victors' domination.
But the site of Arques existed long before the crusade. Visigothic and Carolingian remains have been found beneath the castle. The medieval crypt, discovered in the 19th century, bears symbols that match neither Catholic nor Cathar art — a third code, perhaps older, linked to the Visigoths who ruled the region in the 5th century.
Arques sits exactly between Rennes-le-Château and Montségur, on an axis that some researchers consider the "Cathar treasure route." The Gorges de l'Arques, plunging into the mountain, may have served as a secret passage for Cathar fugitives transporting the famous treasure after Montségur fell in 1244.
