On April 18, 1775, patriot spies learned that British troops were preparing to march on Concord to seize arms depots and arrest revolutionary leaders Samuel Adams and John Hancock. Paul Revere, along with William Dawes and Samuel Prescott, was tasked with alerting the militias. The agreed signal from the Old North Church — 'one if by land, two if by sea' — indicated the British route.
Revere crossed the Charles River by horse, avoiding British patrols, and spread the alarm from house to house. His ride, though partially intercepted, allowed the militias of Lexington and Concord to prepare, leading to the first battles of the American Revolution the following morning.
