La Corregidora and the Conspirators
In 1810, Querétaro had become the secret hotbed of the Mexican revolution. In the casa de los Domínguez, Josefa Ortiz organized literary tertulias that actually concealed political meetings. Miguel Hidalgo, Ignacio Allende, Juan Aldama and Mariano Abasolo met there to plan the uprising against viceroyal authority. The conspiracy, initially planned for December 1810, had to be hastened when Spanish authorities discovered the plot.
On September 13, 1810, Josefa Ortiz was locked up by her own husband, corregidor Miguel Domínguez, to prevent her from warning the conspirators. But she managed to send an alert message through Ignacio Pérez, who rode to San Miguel el Grande to warn Allende. The latter rushed to Dolores to inform Hidalgo, thus triggering the Grito de Dolores of September 16, 1810, founding act of Mexican independence.
