Emperor Maximilian of Mexico faced his final hours in
June 19, 1867 — the final hours of the Mexican Empire
« I am going to die for a just cause, that of Mexico's independence and freedom. May my blood seal the misfortunes of my new homeland. »— Maximilian I of Mexico, June 19, 1867
In 1864, supported by Napoleon III and Mexican conservatives, Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian of Austria accepted the crown of Mexico. But from 1866, facing American pressure and financial difficulties, France withdrew its troops, leaving Maximilian alone against the republican forces of Benito Juárez. Refusing to abdicate despite his wife Charlotte's pleas, the emperor took refuge in Querétaro with his last faithful followers: generals Miguel Miramón and Tomás Mejía.
The siege of Querétaro lasted 71 days, from March to May 1867. On May 15, betrayed by Colonel Miguel López, Maximilian was captured at Cerro de las Campanas. His trial, from June 13 to 16, was swift: despite European diplomatic interventions and appeals for clemency, Juárez maintained the death sentence. On June 19, 1867 at 7 AM, Maximilian, Miramón and Mejía were shot. The emperor, aged 34, died shouting '¡Viva México!', definitively sealing the failure of French intervention and the triumph of the Republic.
