Maryland — the promise of a sanctuary for faith
« “No person or persons whatsoever within this Province professing to believe in Jesus Christ, shall from henceforth be any ways troubled, molested or discountenanced for or in respect of his or her religion nor in the free exercise thereof within this Province, so as they be not unfaithful to the Lord Proprietary, or molest or conspire against the civil government established or to be established in this Province.” »— Maryland Toleration Act, 1649
In 1632, George Calvert, the first Lord Baltimore, obtained a royal charter to found a colony in North America. A victim of anti-Catholic discrimination in England, he dreamed of a refuge for Catholics, but also a place where all Christian faiths could coexist. Upon his death, his son Cecilius Calvert inherited the project. In March 1634, the ships Ark and Dove, carrying 140 colonists, including Catholics and Protestants, landed on the shores of what would become St. Mary's City, Maryland's first capital.
Under the leadership of Governor Leonard Calvert, Cecilius's brother, the colony was established on principles of religious tolerance unique for its time. This philosophy was formally enshrined in the Maryland Toleration Act of 1649, guaranteeing freedom of worship to all Christians. St. Mary's City became a social laboratory, a rare example of peaceful coexistence in a world torn by religious wars. This legacy of freedom of conscience endures, even as the city has evolved and its original buildings are now archaeological sites and faithful replicas.
