From Vercingetorix to Augustus, the clash of two worlds
📱 1 to 10 phones · 1 team per phone · Independent codes
Autun was founded by Emperor Augustus to replace Bibracte, the capital of the Aedui where Vercingetorix was elected leader of the Gallic coalition. Between the mysterious pyramid of Pierre de Couhard and the still-standing Roman gates, two civilizations face each other.
Autun — Augustodunum, the city of Augustus — was created to make people forget Bibracte. The Romans built monumental gates, a 20,000-seat theater, and a temple dedicated to Janus. But the Aedui never forgot their former capital. The Pierre de Couhard, a stone pyramid whose exact origin no one knows, bears witness to a past that Rome failed to erase.
« "It seems to me this land has a longer memory than Rome itself." »— — Strabo, Geography, 1st century BC
In 52 BC, Vercingetorix was elected leader of the Gallic coalition at Bibracte, the Aedui's oppidum perched on Mont Beuvray. From this capital, the young Arvernian chief organized resistance against Caesar. The Battle of Alesia would end this dream of independence.
After the conquest, Augustus founded Augustodunum on the plain, 25 km from Bibracte. The new city was to symbolize the Romanization of Gaul. Its gates — the Porte Saint-André and the Porte d'Arroux — are among the best preserved in the Roman world. The theater could hold the city's entire population.
In the 12th century, the sculptor Gislebertus carved on the tympanum of the Cathedral of Saint-Lazare a Last Judgment of unparalleled power. And at the foot of the city, the Pierre de Couhard — a 27-meter truncated pyramid — remains an enigma: Gallo-Roman tomb, druidic monument, or something else entirely?

Absolutely. The puzzles aren't obvious — a curious teen will sweat just enough to be proud of cracking them. Progressive hints prevent frustration: if stuck, unlock hint level 1, then 2, then 3.
Three hint levels per puzzle, with a small increasing time penalty. If truly stuck after level 3, you can skip the step (45-min penalty). The point: nobody stays blocked and goes home frustrated.
