Supramonte: Land of Bandits and Traditions
The Supramonte is an impenetrable limestone massif in the heart of Sardinia, characterized by its deep canyons, hidden caves, and dense vegetation. This region has long been the setting for traditional pastoral life, but also the ideal refuge for Sardinian bandits who found protection and anonymity there. In the 19th century, the term 'bandit' did not always refer to a simple criminal, but often to a man in rebellion against the state, sometimes supported by the local population who saw him as a defender of ancestral values.
Giovanni Corbeddu Salis (1844-1898) is undoubtedly the most famous of these figures. A native of Oliena, he spent decades on the run after a murder conviction he always denied. He became a living legend, known for his intelligence, his sense of honor – he was said to protect the weak and women – and his ability to navigate the most secret paths of the Supramonte, constantly evading the carabinieri. His death, during a confrontation in 1898, marked the end of an era and enshrined his myth in Sardinian folklore.
