The Dawn of the Qing Dynasty in Shenyang
Shenyang, then known as Mukden, was the first imperial capital of the Qing dynasty before its transfer to Beijing. It was here that Nurhaci, the charismatic founder, laid the foundations of an empire by uniting the Jurchen (Manchu) tribes in the early 17th century. In 1616, he proclaimed himself Khan of the 'Later Jin', marking the beginning of a new era. His successors, particularly his son Hong Taiji, continued to expand their influence.
In 1636, Hong Taiji, from the Mukden Palace, renamed the dynasty 'Qing' (purity) and proclaimed himself emperor. He laid the foundations of a Sinicized state while maintaining the Manchu identity. Shenyang was the political and military heart of this emerging power until 1644, when the Qing, taking advantage of the chaos of the Ming dynasty's collapse, conquered Beijing and established their new capital there, thus beginning more than two and a half centuries of imperial rule over all of China.
