Danbury — Hat Maker's Mercury Curse

Danbury began its rise as a hat manufacturing center in the late 18th century, leveraging its access to water and raw materials. By the mid-19th century, industrialization transformed small workshops into vast factories employing thousands. Names like Mallory, Tweedy, and Loewe became synonymous with quality and mass production. The city was so dominated by this industry that it became internationally known as the 'Hat City,' exporting its products worldwide.

However, this era of prosperity was not without its drawbacks. Working conditions were often harsh, and the use of mercury in the felting process led to serious illnesses, notably 'mad hatter's disease.' Social tensions culminated in the famous Danbury Hatters' Strike (1902-1908), a landmark event in American labor law history. Despite its gradual decline in the 20th century due to changing fashion and relocation, Danbury's legacy as an industrial powerhouse remains deeply embedded in its identity.
