Your quest for the secrets of Bushido begins at Tsurugaoka Hachimangū, a Shinto shrine founded in 1063 by Minamoto no Yoriyoshi and relocated in 1180 by Minamoto no Yoritomo. This National Treasure of Japan was the tutelary shrine of the Kamakura shogunate (1185-1333), a center for samurai rituals. Ascend the 61 stone steps of the main staircase leading to the hongū, rebuilt in 1810. The lotus pond (Shin-en), excavated in 1812 over approximately 7000 m², is home to koi carp, silent witnesses to the ancient shogunate capital.
