In the shadow of the Tatra Mountains, the zbójnicy—fierce highland outlaws—reigned through the 17th and 18th centuries
You are Seweryn Goszczyński, the poet and ethnographer, in Zakopane in the mid-19th century, tasked with preserving the vanishing legends of the zb
Delve into the legends of the zbójnicy, the Tatra bandits who left their mark on the history of Zakopane and Lesser Poland in the 19th century.
Your quest begins on Krupówki Street, Zakopane's main artery, a kilometer long. Developed in the late 19th century as a commercial axis, this pedestrian street was already the nerve center of tourism by the 1870s. Lined with Goral-style wooden chalets, it was a passage for the zbójnicy, the famous Tatra bandits, who sold loot and information there according to local archives. In 1888, physician Tytus Chałubiński founded the Muzeum Tatrzańskie im. dra Tytusa Chałubińskiego, a key place to document the lives of these highlanders between 1800 and 1860, and which is now part of the Tatra UNESCO Heritage candidacy.
Continue towards the Church of the Holy Family, Kościół Świętej Rodziny, built in 1896-1897 by architect Jan Karpiel-Słowikowski in the wooden Zakopane style. With its 36-meter high bell tower, this church was a place of worship for the Goral involved in zbójnickie legends in the 19th century. Its interior is adorned with wooden sculptures by Władysław Hasior and frescoes dating from 1920, showcasing local craftsmanship. It is here that the highland soul of Lesser Poland manifests itself strongly, illustrating the deep connection between spirituality and the traditions of Zakopane's inhabitants.
Your journey then leads you to Willa Koliba, the first Zakopane-style villa, built in 1890 by Stanisław Witkiewicz, the architect who initiated this national style. Located 500 meters from Krupówki, this 300 m² villa served as a model for over 50 Goral buildings in the region. Becoming a museum in 1920, it retains its original interiors. Willa Koliba is inseparable from 19th-century mountain tourism and the era of the zbójnicy, a period when Zakopane was developing as a climatic and cultural resort, classified as a historical monument in 1950.
The itinerary continues towards Kościół Matki Bożej Częstochowskiej, the Church of Our Lady of Częstochowa, built between 1880 and 1882 in the carved wood style of the Tatras. Its 50-meter bell tower is visible from Krupówki, and its main altar from 1885 houses an NBP icon, making this a place of Goral pilgrimages since 1890. Not far, Cmentarz Zasłużonych na Pęksowym Brzyzku, founded in 1850, holds the graves of zbójnickie figures like Wojciech Kasprzak, as well as Tytus Chałubiński, who died in 1889, and Sabała, who died in 1894, both essential to Zakopane's history.
Your exploration concludes at the Cemetery of the Meritorious, Cmentarz Zasłużonych na Pęksowym Brzyzku, classified as a cultural reserve since 1974. This place of memory, with its 400 carved wooden tombs, is a true historical monument in Poland. The tomb of Jan Krzeptowski 'Sabała', the legendary guide and zbójnicka figure, evokes the ballads collected by Seweryn Goszczyński. He himself had passed zbójnickie artifacts to Tytus Chałubiński. This thematic circuit in Lesser Poland, between Goral architecture and zbójnicy legends, offers an interactive visit and a deep understanding of Zakopane's history and cultural heritage, within the Tatra Biosphere Reserve of 1993.
