The Miami Confederacy's Last Stand — Decode Chief Richardville's Final Treaty

The current lands of Indiana were home to numerous indigenous nations, including the powerful Miami Confederacy, which controlled a vast territory spanning present-day Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois. Fort Wayne, known as Kekionga, was a crucial hub for the Miami, strategically located at the confluence of the three rivers. It was a thriving center for trade, agriculture, and community life, long before the arrival of European explorers and settlers.

The 18th century was marked by intense conflicts between indigenous nations and European colonial powers, and later the United States. Miami Chief Little Turtle (Mihšihkinaahkwa) was a key figure, leading significant victories against the American army. However, relentless settler pressure and military defeats led to land cession treaties, such as the Treaty of Greenville in 1795. Chief Jean Baptiste de Richardville (Pinšiwa), Little Turtle's nephew, succeeded his uncle and, as principal chief, sought to negotiate agreements to protect his people's interests in the face of American expansion, thereby preserving a remnant of their sovereignty and heritage.
