**Carlisle 1879: The Invisible Souls of the 'Great Experiment'**

« A great general has said that the only good Indian is a dead one... I agree with him, but only in this sense: that all the Indian there is in the race should be dead. Kill the Indian in him, and save the man. »
Richard Henry Pratt, founder of the Carlisle Indian Industrial School, 1892

The Carlisle Experiment: Forced Assimilation and Resistance

The Carlisle Indian Industrial School, active from 1879 to 1918, was the first federal American institution to implement a policy of forced assimilation for Indigenous children. Under its founder Richard Henry Pratt's motto, 'Kill the Indian, save the man,' thousands of children from over 140 different tribes were taken from their homes to be re-educated. They received an Anglo-Saxon education, were forced to abandon their language, clothing, and names, and were often subjected to harsh conditions and forced labor.

Despite declared intentions of 'civilization,' the school is now recognized for its role in cultural destruction and the intergenerational trauma it caused. The Carlisle Cemetery, where the remains of over 180 students rest, bears witness to the hardships endured. Carlisle's legacy continues to be a subject of study and commemoration, with ongoing efforts for reconciliation and recognition of the voices of survivors and victims.
