In the sun-baked heart of Phoenix, the Hohokam mastered the desert 1,500 years ago, carving 500 miles of canals from the Salt River to feed vast fields
You are a lead archaeologist, circa 1929 Phoenix, commissioned by the city to investigate the Pueblo Grande ruins.
Your mission is to unlock the secrets of what is now the S'
Delve into the mystery of the Hohokam builders, whose irrigation networks allowed a civilization to flourish in the Phoenix desert 1500 years ago.
Your journey begins at the entrance of the S'edav Va'aki Museum and Archaeological Park, 4619 E Washington St, Phoenix, AZ 85034, a 1500-year-old Hohokam archaeological site. Here, you discover the ruins of a village continuously inhabited for nearly ten centuries, until the mid-15th century. This location, designated a National Historic Landmark in 1964 by the National Park Service, was donated to the city of Phoenix in 1924, and its museum opened in 1929. It is the starting point of your investigation into Arizona's aquatic heritage.
At the heart of the village, the Platform Mound at Pueblo Grande stands, a central mound built over three centuries starting approximately 1000 years ago. Measuring about 46 m x 91 m and 7.6 m high, it contains over 20,000 m³ of fill. This structure, potentially used for religious ceremonies or as an administrative center, was the pivot of a village with over 1500 inhabitants, extending nearly a mile north with its residential 'suburbs' in Phoenix.
Along the 1 km interpretive trail, you will see the Hohokam Ballcourt at Pueblo Grande, an excavated ballcourt that attests to the ceremonial importance of the site. At least three ballcourts have been identified here, illustrating the social and ritual life of the Hohokam. Further south, the Park of the Four Waters preserves two large Hohokam canals, one 26 m wide and 6.1 m deep, the other 18 m, both originating from the Salt River and capable of irrigating over 10,000 acres.
Your exploration then leads you to the Replicated Hohokam Dwellings, two full-scale reproductions of Hohokam houses dug into a shallow 0.5 m pit. These dwellings remind us that the Hohokam were desert farmers, masters of an elaborate irrigation system extending over nearly 1000 miles of canals. Canal System 2, starting from Pueblo Grande, stretched over 16 miles to Glendale, and some of these Phoenix canals are still in use today.
As you complete your journey through these remains, you understand the scope of Hohokam ingenuity and its lasting impact on Arizona's heritage. From the entrance of the Pueblo Grande Museum to the canals of the Park of the Four Waters, each step reveals how a civilization thrived in an arid environment through exceptional water management. This thematic circuit in Phoenix offers a unique perspective on the region's history, blending archaeology, engineering, and culture.
