The Garifuna Exile: Rhythms and Resilience
« Our ancestors crossed the seas with nothing but their spirit, their language, and the rhythm of their drums. »— Garifuna Proverb
The Garifuna people, also known as Garinagu, are descendants of enslaved Africans and indigenous Caribbean (Kalinago) peoples of the Lesser Antilles. Their history is intrinsically linked to the island of St. Vincent, where they forged a distinct identity as the 'Black Caribs'. After decades of fierce resistance against British colonization, notably during the Second Carib War (1795-1797) led by Chief Joseph Chatoyer, the British deported approximately 5,000 Garifuna to Roatán Island in Honduras. From there, they dispersed along the coasts of Central America, arriving in Belize (then British Honduras) in the early 19th century.
Dangriga has become a stronghold of Garifuna culture, where ancestral traditions have been jealously preserved and passed down. Music, especially the infectious rhythm of Punta, is the soul of the Garifuna people, expressing joy, sorrow, and collective memory. On November 19, Garifuna Settlement Day commemorates their arrival and resilience, a day officially recognized in 1941 thanks to the efforts of Thomas Vincent Ramos. In 2001, UNESCO proclaimed the Garifuna language, dance, and music as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity, highlighting their vital role in global cultural diversity.
